LUX* Maldives implements a coral reef monitoring project
The luxurious resort LUX* Maldives implements a coral reef monitoring project in their Marine Biology centre. This recently announced project lines up with their constant effort to protect the biodiversity and resilience of coral reefs in South Ari Atoll of Maldives where the holiday resort is situated in.
This new project of monitoring the reef garden of Dhidhoofinolhu Island aims to increase awareness amongst the holiday guest, about the importance of sustainable environmental practices to protect the coral reefs. Moreover, the conservation project largely focuses on preserving and protecting the marine ecosystem around the pristine island of Didhoofinolhu as well.
In addition to this, a workshop was conducted on coral reefs and the climate changes in the Sunny Side of Life, Maldives by the Marine Biologist of LUX* Maldives, Chiara Mascetti and the Senior project officer of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), Gabriel Grimsditch. The Marine Biologist of the holiday island, Chiara has been trained to recognize coral bleaching and to collect relevant information and data. Grimsditch explained, this will “help scientists and managers at a national level have a better understanding of the health of coral reefs and to identify which parts of the reef are healthy, recovering or damaged,” and Mascetti added that “Monitoring and understanding what is happening on the reef and developing Marine Managed Areas is crucial to implement effective environmental management strategies and decide where to focus our effort.”
The five star resort also organizes research programs at their Marine Biology Centre, and activities for their precious guests of all ages to raise awareness about marine conservation in South Ari Atoll of the island nation Maldives.
