According to the Maldivian Folklore, it is said that Malé (Maa-le) was originally the island where the first king of the Maldives; Prince Koimalaa resided. Afterwards, entire country was named after the Capital Island with the meaning being ‘The Islands (dives) of Malé.’ Though the island is small in size, almost one third of the country’s population lives in the city, including foreign workers.
